Happy New Year!
Looking forward to a great new year of new ideas and creative endeavors. The diptych two-panel piece shown here is my latest completed artwork. It is installed in a beautiful new home high on a hill.
Juxtaposition
Juxtaposition is the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect. This image, I think, shows this concept very well. I went out with my shooting partner Bill Leahy and we happened upon this area behind a large grain elevator and it produced many fine geometric shots for us that day.
My Advice
My advice to those thinking of submitting to art festivals…go for it! It will be some of the most rewarding and interesting experiences you’ll have in your life. It will make you a better artist - you will understand why you are making art, how to talk about your artistic process and you will learn how to sell you art - all while getting valuable feedback from interested art lovers and art buyers!
Art Friends
I enjoy reuniting and visiting with artist friends I have met at the festivals over the years. It is ‘hit and miss’ when you will see many of them again, as some get in the same shows you do that year and some don’t. We all share our latest “War Stories” from festivals, like the soaring heat that caused artists and customers alike to faint during one show or a flash flood running through festival grounds of another show in the SW, damaging may artists’ work from drenching rain. One year in Portland OR it rained so long and hard...
Explanation Board
I love to interact with all of the people (can be hundreds of people a day) and tell the story of my journey as an artist and the process I use to create my work. I have an unusual process of photography and mixed media, when people find this out, they are often surprised initially thinking my pieces are paintings! I use an explanation board, shown here, to help some visualize my process.
